Code P0507: Idle Control System RPM - Higher Than Expected

Diagnostic & Technical Explanation
Code P0507 (Idle Control System RPM - Higher Than Expected) sets when commanded idle RPM (or, on diesel platforms, idle fuel quantity) does not match the ECM's target, or the idle air control actuator's circuit reports an open/out-of-range condition. Root causes are a carbon-fouled IAC valve or throttle bore restricting airflow, an unmetered vacuum/intake air leak that pushes idle high, a sticking throttle plate, or a failed IAC motor/solenoid and its wiring.

Probability-Ranked Repair Procedures (4 Ranked Fixes)

Rank #1

Clean throttle body and IAC passage

Easy DIY
Parts Estimate: $8.0–$20.0 USD Labor Estimate: 0.5 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Remove the intake duct and IAC valve or throttle body cover
  2. 2. Spray throttle-body cleaner into the idle air passage and throttle bore
  3. 3. Wipe away carbon with a shop towel, avoiding the throttle plate seal edge
  4. 4. Reinstall, reset idle relearn, and confirm idle stabilizes
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 Throttle body / IAC cleaner spray
Rank #2

Inspect and repair vacuum/intake leaks

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $10.0–$60.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.0 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Inspect all vacuum hoses, PCV lines, and intake gaskets for cracks
  2. 2. Smoke-test or use a propane/carb-cleaner leak check at idle
  3. 3. Replace any hose, gasket, or clamp found leaking
  4. 4. Verify idle RPM and fuel trims return to normal
Rank #3

Replace idle air control valve/motor

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $30.0–$140.0 USD Labor Estimate: 0.7 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal
  2. 2. Unplug the IAC connector and remove its mounting screws
  3. 3. Install the replacement valve with a new gasket
  4. 4. Perform the ECM idle relearn procedure and road test
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 Idle air control valve · 🔧 IAC valve gasket
Rank #4

Diagnose IAC circuit wiring at the ECM

Professional Required
Parts Estimate: $10.0–$45.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.2 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Back-probe the IAC driver circuits at the connector with a scan tool commanding sweep
  2. 2. Voltage-drop test each leg back to the ECM
  3. 3. Repair chafed or corroded conductors
  4. 4. Confirm commanded vs actual idle counts track together
