Code P0456: EVAP System Leak Detected (very small leak)

Diagnostic & Technical Explanation
Code P0456 (EVAP System Leak Detected (very small leak)) sets when the EVAP leak-detection monitor cannot hold vacuum or pressure in the fuel vapor system within its small-leak threshold (typically a 0.020 in. equivalent orifice), including the tighter very-small-leak threshold and the fuel-tank-side/fresh-air-side variants used on natural-vacuum leak detection systems, or when the general EVAP system monitor itself fails. The dominant causes are a loose or worn fuel filler cap, a cracked EVAP hose, or a purge/vent solenoid that no longer seals.

Probability-Ranked Repair Procedures (4 Ranked Fixes)

Rank #1

Inspect and reseat or replace fuel filler cap

Easy DIY
Parts Estimate: $10.0–$25.0 USD Labor Estimate: 0.2 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Inspect the filler cap gasket for cracks or dry rot
  2. 2. Reseat the cap until it clicks
  3. 3. Clear the code and complete an EVAP drive cycle
  4. 4. Replace the cap if the code returns
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 Fuel filler cap (OE-style seal)
Rank #2

Smoke-test EVAP system and replace leaking hose

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $15.0–$60.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.0 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Connect a smoke machine to the EVAP service port
  2. 2. Watch for smoke at hose unions, the canister, and the filler neck
  3. 3. Replace the leaking hose or seal
  4. 4. Re-test until the system holds pressure
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 EVAP vapor hose assortment
Rank #3

Replace EVAP purge solenoid valve

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $25.0–$90.0 USD Labor Estimate: 0.6 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Locate the purge solenoid on the engine-side EVAP line
  2. 2. Verify it holds vacuum when de-energized with a hand pump
  3. 3. Replace the solenoid and clip the harness
  4. 4. Clear the code and re-run the EVAP monitor
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 EVAP purge solenoid valve
Rank #4

Replace charcoal canister / vent valve assembly

Professional Required
Parts Estimate: $90.0–$350.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.8 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Raise the vehicle and remove the canister shield
  2. 2. Test the vent valve for sealing with a scan-tool actuator command
  3. 3. Replace the canister or vent valve assembly
  4. 4. Verify the leak-detection monitor passes
