Code P0411: AIR System A Incorrect Flow Detected

Diagnostic & Technical Explanation
Code P0411 (AIR System A Incorrect Flow Detected) sets when the ECM commands the secondary air injection system (used to inject fresh air into the exhaust during cold start to speed catalyst light-off and reduce emissions) and detects incorrect flow, an open/shorted switching valve circuit, or a control circuit fault. Causes are a seized or failed AIR pump, a stuck or corroded switching/check valve, a collapsed or leaking air delivery hose, or damaged wiring to the pump/valve.

Probability-Ranked Repair Procedures (4 Ranked Fixes)

Rank #1

Inspect AIR delivery hoses and check valves

Easy DIY
Parts Estimate: $15.0–$50.0 USD Labor Estimate: 0.7 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Inspect the air delivery hose from the pump to the exhaust manifold for collapse, cracking, or disconnection
  2. 2. Check the one-way check valve for exhaust blow-by damage
  3. 3. Replace any damaged hose or check valve
  4. 4. Clear the code and verify airflow with the system commanded on
Rank #2

Test and replace the AIR switching/combination valve

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $40.0–$180.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.0 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Command the switching valve with a scan tool while listening/feeling for valve movement
  2. 2. Inspect the valve and its connector for carbon or corrosion
  3. 3. Replace a valve that does not switch cleanly
  4. 4. Clear codes and verify flow direction changes correctly
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 AIR switching/combination valve
Rank #3

Replace a seized or weak secondary air injection pump

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $80.0–$350.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.2 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Command the AIR pump on with a scan tool and listen/feel for operation
  2. 2. Check the pump relay and fuse if it does not run
  3. 3. Replace a pump that is seized, noisy, or produces insufficient flow
  4. 4. Clear codes and verify flow readings meet spec
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 Secondary air injection pump
Rank #4

Repair AIR system control circuit wiring

Professional Required
Parts Estimate: $10.0–$65.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.3 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Back-probe the control legs at the pump/valve connector
  2. 2. Voltage-drop test the harness back to the ECM/relay
  3. 3. Repair chafed or corroded conductors with soldered, heat-shrunk splices
  4. 4. Clear codes and confirm the system responds to commands
