Code P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

Diagnostic & Technical Explanation
Code P0300 (Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected) sets when the ECM's crankshaft-acceleration misfire monitor counts combustion events across multiple cylinders (or an undifferentiated pattern) beyond the calibrated threshold, including variants triggered by a low fuel level, a cold-start window, or a commanded fuel cutoff. Because no single cylinder is isolated, the cause is almost always something that affects the whole engine at once: a vacuum leak, worn spark plugs across the set, a weak fuel pump/low fuel level, or a base ignition timing/reluctor fault.

Probability-Ranked Repair Procedures (4 Ranked Fixes)

Rank #1

Replace spark plugs and inspect ignition coils as a set

Easy DIY
Parts Estimate: $30.0–$90.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.2 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Retrieve freeze-frame data to see which cylinders were flagged
  2. 2. Remove and inspect all spark plugs for wear, fouling, or incorrect gap
  3. 3. Replace the full set with OE-spec plugs
  4. 4. Swap coils between cylinders if a weak coil is suspected
  5. 5. Clear codes and monitor misfire counters on a drive cycle
Rank #2

Smoke-test intake and vacuum lines for a shared leak

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $15.0–$60.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.0 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Connect a smoke machine at the intake tract with all accessory vacuum ports capped
  2. 2. Watch for smoke escaping at intake gaskets, PCV hoses, or brake booster lines
  3. 3. Replace any cracked hose or gasket found
  4. 4. Clear the code and verify fuel trims return to normal
Rank #3

Verify fuel delivery and refuel if the tank is low

Easy DIY
Parts Estimate: $5.0–$20.0 USD Labor Estimate: 0.2 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Check the fuel gauge and refuel above one-quarter tank if low
  2. 2. Scan for low fuel pressure or pump duty-cycle codes stored alongside the misfire
  3. 3. Clear the code and complete a drive cycle to confirm it does not return
Required Replacement Parts: 🔧 Fresh fuel (top off tank)
Rank #4

Test fuel pump output pressure and delivery volume

Moderate DIY
Parts Estimate: $20.0–$250.0 USD Labor Estimate: 1.3 Shop Hours
  1. 1. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the test port or rail
  2. 2. Compare static and key-on pressure to spec
  3. 3. Perform a timed volume test at the return line if accessible
  4. 4. Replace a fuel pump that cannot hold pressure or deliver volume under load
